File Extension WPS

The WPS file extension is one that is no longer regularly used in the word processing world. It was primarily used in the Microsoft Works Word Processor prior to the year 2006. Today, in lieu of the WPS file extension, Microsoft word processing documents use the file extension DOC. If a computer user runs across a file with the extension of WPS, it is most likely a relatively old file. However, it is not usually difficult to open WPS files; most current Microsoft programs can open then intuitively and simply; running into major problems or difficulties in opening these file types are rare among users who have a Windows operating system.

Among Windows operating systems, there are three primary programs that are designed to work explicitly with WPS files. These are Microsoft Works, Microsoft Word and Microsoft Publisher. Current versions of these programs - if any - do not use the WPS file type any more, however. If a user is curious as to how a file of this type has appeared on their computer, the usual explanation is that they, at one point in the past, used one of these Windows programs. The chances of receiving a WPS file from someone today is quite rare, as no popular Windows programs use this file type any longer.

More Info Regarding File Extension WPS

For people with Macintosh computers, there are three primary programs that once used the WPS file extension regularly. These programs are Microsoft Works, Planamesa NeoOffice (version 2.2 or later) and they can be converted using DataViz MacLinkPlus. It is far more unusual to run across files with the WPS extension on them in a Mac computer, however. It still does sometimes occur, and when it does, one of these three programs can be used to open such a file fairly easily.

With a Windows based computer, those who need to open a WPS file can usually use Microsoft Word these days. To do so, users usually need to select "All File Types" or the "Word 2000" option when opening the file from within this program. This same concept applies to the Microsoft Works program as well. Alternatively, if the WPS file is located on the desktop or somewhere similarly convenient, a user could right click on it, select the "Open With..." option, and browse for the Microsoft Word or Microsoft Works application.

Upon successfully opening a WPS file, users are encouraged to use the "Save As" option under the "File" menu of Microsoft programs to save the document under the current file extension of DOC. By saving the WPS file as a DOC file, you will be able to open it up much more easily in the future. It is important to keep in mind, however, that WPS files do not include the rich formatting options found in regular DOC files; therefore, they may open and appear not to be formatted or may be jumbled. Users will probably have to go through the document and make repairs or changes to the layout to make it more visually appealing.

Errors involving the file extension WPS are relatively rare because this file type simply is not used very much any more. However, the most common reason for an error in opening a WPS file is because a user may not have any sort of remotely compatible program installed on their computer. In this case, the computer is unable to recognize the file extension WPS and the user is prompted to determine a program that will open it. Users who do not have access to the Microsoft Office suite usually run into the most trouble with WPS file extensions.

When you have opened a WPS file using a Microsoft program like Word, use the processor to format the file to look the way that you want it to. Once this is accomplished, simply save the file in the DOC file format. Going forward, you should not experience any more problems with the file, and opening it should be no problem at all. You will also be able to send and share the document with virtually anyone once you have converted it from WPS to DOC.
